Penetration testing (a "pen test") is an authorised, simulated attack on your website, app or network by security experts. The goal is to find weaknesses before real attackers do, and to give you a clear plan to fix them.
How a penetration test works
- Agree the scope — which systems can be tested, when and how, in writing
- Gather information about the systems in scope
- Test for weaknesses such as weak logins, outdated software or insecure settings
- Safely confirm which weaknesses are real
- Report the findings with clear priorities and how to fix them
- Re-test after fixes are made
A legitimate test always has written permission from the owner of the systems.
Types of penetration tests
- Web application — your website, portal or online store
- Mobile app — Android and iPhone apps and their servers
- Network — office network, Wi-Fi, firewalls and servers
- Cloud — settings in your cloud hosting
What you get
A report that explains each issue in plain language, how serious it is, and step-by-step fixes — plus a technical section for your developers.
Does your business need one?
Consider a penetration test if you:
- Take online payments or store customer data
- Are launching a new app, portal or online store
- Work with clients who ask about your security
- Have had a security incident before
