A good office network setup keeps your team online, your data safe and your guests off your business systems. Here are the parts that matter.
1. Internet — and a backup line
Choose a reliable main connection and, if downtime is costly, a second line from another provider. A router or firewall can switch automatically when one fails.
2. Structured cabling
Desks, printers, cameras and access points work best on proper network cables to a central rack. Label every cable — it saves hours later.
3. Business Wi-Fi coverage
One home router rarely covers an office. Use business access points placed for full coverage, managed from one place.
4. A firewall
A firewall controls what comes in and goes out of your network, blocks known threats and can filter harmful websites.
5. Separate networks
Keep staff, guests and devices such as cameras and printers on separate networks (VLANs). A guest should never be able to reach your files or POS.
6. Power protection
Use a UPS for your internet equipment and servers so short power cuts do not drop the network.
7. Documentation and support
Keep a simple record of devices, passwords (securely stored) and settings, and agree who supports the network.
Signs your network needs an upgrade
- Wi-Fi drops in some rooms
- Slow internet when many people are online
- Guests use the same Wi-Fi as staff
- Nobody knows the router password
Frequently asked questions
### Do we need a server in the office? Not always. Many offices use cloud services instead. See cloud hosting vs shared hosting.
### Can you set up CCTV on the network? Yes. Cameras should be on their own network segment for security.
